FINALLY AUSTRALIA – Marriage Equality
It has been years in the making but finally Australia is now the 26th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, woooo! Canada, England, Ireland, Wales and US, are some of the countries that have already implemented marriage equality.
Citizens of Australia were asked to vote yes or no via a postal survey. 61.6 per cent voted yes and 38.4 per cent, no. The Senate then voted 43-12 to favour same sex marriage! “Australia has done it. What a day for love, for equality, for respect,” declared Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Finally marriage equality, the first legally recognised same-sex wedding can take place on January 9. LGBTIQ people finally equal rights for you to celebrate your love.
As much as it is very exciting that Australia has joined the many nations that now give the deserved right to the LGBT community to be married; there are still many places around the world that don’t. In some countries for simply being gay there is a risk of being put in jail or even death penalty. The fight isn’t over, but hopefully Australia making this big change, will inspire others to follow.
